shadow copy is a snapshot of a volume that almost automatically duplicates all the data attached to that volume at a specified time. VSS identifies each dark copy with a persistent GUID.
Shadow Burning Set is a set of shadow copies of different volumes that were burned by all at the same time. VSS individually identifies each shadow copy, which is identified by a persistent GUID.
How the PC or software vendor uses shadow copies is up to you. After the shadow copy has undoubtedly been made, two volumes of the shadow copy are effectively made available on their way to the system: the original volume, which can be accessed in the usual way; and specific copied data that can be viewed through the VSS API.
This means that several actions can score points at the same time:
- Normal system applications can be quickly resumed, otherwise use the original volume and add Stored on the hard drive.
- Applications that clearly use the VSS Query API to permanently access the shadow copy volume can replay backups or similar operations.
Shadow copies don’t really need to be implemented unchanged for every file, directory, or volume. Various implementations of the shadow copy mechanism ( vendors ) may use unusual approaches to create shadow copies. However, for all applications that typically use the VSS API, all dark copies should look the same.

Standard Shadow Copy State
While the filesystem actually flushes out stale I / O buffers to create a correct shadow copy, this does not guarantee that incomplete I / O is handled in the most efficient and effective manner.
Assuming there are fully VSS-compliant applications on the system, the data will be consistent if the corresponding shadow copy fails in state . TThe hard copy in a persistent fail provides an image of the hard drive that is likely to be the same as it would be after a catastrophic tiered shutdown. All available files will remain on the volume; there is no guarantee that they will not contain incomplete I / O operations or data corruption.
While Failure Consistency does not completely solve all problems with configuring stable set backups (see General Volume Backups ), it introduces some positive aspects of a backup set that lead to a backup operation copy should be able to use:
- The volume contained in the shadow replica contains all files, even in a consistent state between failures. Instant Freeze And Thaw Images
Freeze or thaw events in some VSS model means:
